What is the difference to the classic 51913 acid battery?

The size is identical, but the technology is different.

• 51913 (Classic): Has liquid acid, caps for refilling and a breather hose. Requires maintenance.
• YT19BL-BS (Modern): Is an AGM battery. After filling, it is sealed. Does not require a hose, hardly emits gas, and has a higher starting power.

My original battery was a GEL battery (Exide), can I use Yuasa AGM?

Yes, absolutely. BMW often installed gel batteries from the factory. The Yuasa AGM (YT19BL-BS) is compatible and often cheaper. AGM batteries also usually have a slightly lower internal resistance, which leads to a stronger starter crank ("faster starting"), while gel batteries are better for very long storage without recharging. For regular use, AGM is often the more spirited choice.

Does this battery fit the newer R1200 GS?

No, caution!

• R1100 / R1150 (up to approx. 2004): Use this large YT19BL-BS (19Ah).
• R1200 GS (from 2004): Use the much smaller YTX14-BS (12Ah). The YT19BL is far too large for the newer 1200 models (LC and air-cooled). Please check the year!

Why does my ABS flash when starting?

On BMW R1100/1150 models, the ABS checks the on-board voltage when starting. If this drops below a certain value during starting (because the battery is old or weak), the ABS goes into "fault" (alternating blinking). The strong YT19BL-BS usually solves this problem, as it keeps the voltage stable and high during starting.
