Yuasa AGM start-stop battery YBX9012 12V 50Ah 520A (YBX9000 series)
Description
Product information
The Yuasa YBX9012 is the compact entry into the top class of starter batteries: the YBX9000 AGM series. It has been specially developed for modern small cars and compact class vehicles that have start-stop systems with brake energy recovery (recuperation). With 50 Ah capacity and 520 A cold cranking current (EN) in the space-saving L1 case, it offers maximum energy density. Thanks to AGM technology (Absorbent Glass Mat), where the acid is bound in a glass fleece, it is leak-proof, vibration-resistant and extremely cycle-resistant.
Highlights at a Glance
- AGM technology (VRLA): The most advanced technology for start-stop vehicles, indispensable for cars that convert braking energy into electricity (recuperation).
- Compact format (L1): Uses the short DIN case (207 mm length), ideal for small cars such as Fiat 500, Smart Fortwo/Forfour or VW Up, which have high-tech onboard.
- Maximum cycle resistance: Designed for approx. 360,000 starting operations, it offers a much longer service life than EFB or standard batteries for frequent charge/discharge cycles.
- Recuperation-capable: Can absorb and store high charging currents (e.g. during braking) extremely quickly, to relieve the vehicle’s electrical system and save fuel.
- 100 % leak-proof: As the acid is bound in the fleece, the battery can be installed in any orientation (even inside the vehicle); there is no risk of acid leakage.
- OE quality: Meets or exceeds car manufacturers’ specifications for AGM original equipment batteries.
The Powerhouse for Small Cars
The YBX9012 is often the only choice for modern small cars with extensive "green technology". Whereas a simple 44Ah wet battery was previously sufficient, models with intelligent battery management and recuperation now absolutely require an AGM battery. If you save money here and install a standard battery, you risk error messages and failure after a few weeks. It replaces common AGM types in size L1 (often 50Ah or 60Ah AGM in compact design).

FAQs about Yuasa YBX9012
What is the difference to EFB (e.g. YBX7012)?
AGM batteries (such as YBX9012) are more powerful than EFB batteries.
- EFB: For start-stop without recuperation (basic systems).
- AGM: For start-stop with recuperation (brake energy recovery). If your car was originally equipped with an AGM battery, you must install an AGM (YBX9012) again. An EFB would overheat and dry out due to the high charging currents during braking.
Can I use this battery instead of a normal 44Ah/45Ah battery?
Yes, if the dimensions (207 mm length) fit. It is the best possible technical upgrade. Especially for occasional drivers or classic car owners who are looking for an absolutely leak-proof and durable battery, AGM technology is interesting, even if the car does not have start-stop. However, check whether your charger/alternator supplies ~14.4-14.8V (which is standard).
Is this a gel battery?
No, it is an AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat). It is often mistaken for gel as both are sealed (VRLA). However, AGM is better suited for starter batteries as (unlike gel) it can supply very high starting currents (cold start). Gel batteries are more likely to be used as pure supply batteries (motorhomes).
Do I need to initialise the battery?
Yes, absolutely. Vehicles that use an AGM battery of this size have a very sensitive battery management system (BMS). The replacement must be registered in the control unit so that the alternator applies the special charging profile for the new AGM battery.
