Product information

The Solar extension cable set (50 metres, 6mm²) is the ultimate long-distance solution for photovoltaic projects involving extreme distances. If your solar panels need to be situated in the sunniest spot on your property – for example, at the far end of a sprawling field, on a remote barn or out in the open countryside – and the inverter is located centrally within the building, this generous 6 mm² cross-section provides the necessary capacity to minimise power losses over the enormous distance of 50 metres.

The set includes two high-quality, double-insulated solar cables: a red cable for the positive terminal (+) and a black cable for the negative terminal (-). Both ends are professionally pre-terminated with MC4-compatible plugs and sockets. Due to the substantial total length of 50 metres (100 metres total circuit length), the 6 mm² cross-section is the absolute minimum technical requirement recommended to maintain the efficiency of your system.

Highlights at a glance

  • Maximum range: With a length of 50 metres per cable, you can also set up installations over extremely long distances, far from the domestic connection or main distribution board.
  • Minimised resistance: A cross-section of 6mm² is essential for this length in order to significantly reduce the voltage drop compared to standard cables (4mm²).
  • Plug & Play installation: The cables are pre-fitted with MC4-compatible connectors at both ends, so no special crimping tools are required.
  • Reliable identification: The clear colour-coding in red (+) and black (-) effectively prevents dangerous polarity mix-ups over this extremely long installation run.
  • Weatherproof & durable: The special cross-linked polyolefin sheath is UV-resistant, ozone-resistant and withstands extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to +90°C.
  • IP67 protection rating: When connected, the connectors are completely dust-tight and protected against temporary submersion.

Areas of application

This 50-metre extension cable is designed for specific long-distance connections:

  • Large ground-mounted systems
    • Ideal for installing modules in remote locations, such as in a field or at the edge of your property, where there is no shade cast by buildings or woodland edges.
  • Agriculture & Industry
    • Connecting remote barns, stables or pumping stations to the central meter cabinet or inverter room.
  • Off-grid systems (24V / 48V)
    • For battery systems at a distance of 50 metres, a 6 mm² cross-section is absolutely essential to maintain a stable charging voltage; for 12 V systems, this distance would already be critical even with a 6 mm² cable.

Installation & Safety Instructions

  • Note the voltage drop
    • With a length of 50 metres, the total current path is 100 metres. For grid-connected systems with high string voltage (> 200V), 6mm² is an excellent choice. At low voltages (e.g. just a single 40V module), the percentage loss over this distance is already noticeable despite using 6mm².
  • Protection for underground installation
    • Although the cable is weather-resistant, it is not protected against mechanical damage. When laying the cable underground, you must use a suitable protective conduit (e.g. cable conduit) to prevent damage caused by rodents or earthworks.
  • Avoid induction and heat
    • Never wind excess cable into a tight coil whilst electricity is flowing. This can lead to induction and the build-up of dangerous heat. Lay any excess length in loose loops.

FAQs on the 50m 6mm² solar extension cable

Is 6 mm² really sufficient for a length of 50 metres?

Yes for high-voltage systems, but borderline for balcony solar installations. With a typical balcony solar system (40V, 10A), you will lose approximately 3 volts (7.5% of power) over a 50-metre run using 6mm² cable. This is technically safe, but already represents a compromise in terms of energy efficiency. For this extreme length, we recommend connecting the modules in series to maximise output, thereby increasing the voltage and reducing the percentage loss.

Will the connectors fit my inverter from Growatt, Deye or Victron?

Yes. The connectors fitted comply with the global MC4 standard. They are a perfect mechanical and electrical fit for the connections on almost all standard solar modules and inverters.

Can I shorten the cable if necessary?

Yes, but only if you have the necessary expertise. You can cut the cable to size. Please bear in mind, however, that you will need professional MC4 connectors and specialised PV crimping pliers for the new connection to ensure a permanently secure connection.
