How can I tell if the battery in an emergency luminaire needs to be replaced?

Modern emergency luminaires with autotest function usually signal a defective or exhausted battery via a status LED (e.g. by red flashing). At the latest, if the luminaire no longer passes the annual endurance test over the full emergency lighting duration, the battery must be replaced immediately. The typical service life of a NiMH battery in this application is approx. 4 years.

In which cases is an emergency lighting duration of 8 hours required?

An extended emergency lighting duration of 8 hours is often required in buildings with special risks or regulations. These include, for example, accommodation facilities (hotels), high-rise buildings, large places of assembly or workplaces with special hazards, to ensure safe evacuation even over a longer period of time.

Can I use this battery in a luminaire for 3 hours emergency lighting duration?

Technically, this is often possible if the battery fits physically. The luminaire would then achieve a significantly longer autonomy time than required. However, it is always recommended to use the battery type specified by the luminaire manufacturer for the respective model (3h or 8h) to ensure optimal function of the charging and monitoring electronics.

How must this battery be disposed of?

Batteries must not be disposed of in household waste. As waste device batteries, you can return them free of charge to collection points in retailers or at municipal recycling centres (e.g. via the GRS collection boxes) to ensure proper and environmentally friendly recycling.
