SONY SONY US18650VTC5A – The high-current standard for maximum performance
Product information
The Sony/Murata US18650VTC5A (short VTC5A) is one of the most powerful and safest lithium-ion cells on the market. It was specially developed for applications requiring extremely high discharge currents, without sacrificing thermal stability.
Within the legendary VTC series, the VTC5A is considered the "gold standard" for high-performance applications. It offers a perfect balance between a solid capacity of 2600 mAh and an immense constant current output of up to 35A (with temperature monitoring). This makes it the first choice for demanding users in the tools and model making sector.
Highlights at a glance
- Extreme high current capability: Continuous discharge currents of up to 35A (with temperature cut-off at 80°C) or 25A without monitoring possible.
- Outstanding thermals: Thanks to its special chemical composition, the cell remains cooler than many competing models even under heavy load.
- High cycle stability: Designed for tough industrial use, the VTC5A retains a stable capacity even after many charge and discharge cycles.
- Low internal resistance: Allows extremely rapid energy output without significant voltage drop ("sag").
- Industrial quality: Manufactured to the highest standards by Murata (formerly Sony), ensuring minimal manufacturing tolerances and maximum reliability.
Areas of application
Due to its performance characteristics, the VTC5A is almost "overqualified" for standard torches and reveals its true potential in:
- Power tools (Powertools)
- Cordless screwdrivers, hand-held circular saws and angle grinders that require massive current surges when starting up and under load.
- Model making
- Drive battery for drones, RC cars or aircraft where high currents and low weight are crucial.
- E-mobility
- Use in battery packs for e-bikes or electric skateboards that are intended to deliver high acceleration values.
- High-end torches
- Searchlights in turbo mode that generate several thousand lumens for a short time.
Assembly & safety notes
- No protection electronics (Unprotected)
- This is an industrial cell without PCB protection. It may only be used in devices that have their own protection circuit against deep discharge, overcharging and short circuit.
- Safe transport
- Never carry these cells loose in your trouser pocket or together with metallic objects (coins, keys). A short circuit at these current levels can cause fire or explosion. Always use a transport box.
- Storage
- Store lithium-ion batteries cool and dry when not in use, ideally at a charge level of approx. 3.6V - 3.7V (storage capacity approx. 40-60%).
- Damaged insulation
- Never continue to use the cell if the outer shrink tube (wrap) is damaged. However, this can easily be replaced with a new one.

FAQs for the Sony US18650VTC5A
Why is the VTC5A better than the VTC6?
It's the current that counts. The VTC6 does have more capacity at 3000 mAh, but at very high currents (over 15-20A) its voltage sags more quickly and it gets hotter. If you need constant currents above 20A, the VTC5A is the safer and higher performing choice.
Is the cell original from Sony or Murata?
Both are correct. Murata has taken over Sony's entire battery division. The specifications and production lines have remained identical. The cells often have no brand designation, but only the type code (US18650VTC5A).
Can I use this cell for my e-bike?
Yes, in combination. The VTC5A is an excellent cell for assembling e-bike battery packs if the bike needs to cope with steep hills or is designed for high acceleration. When building it yourself, be sure to use a suitable BMS (Battery Management System).| Capacity: | 2.6Ah |
