CNC Battery 1756BA2 for Allen Bradley - 3V Lithium PLC Buffer Battery (Series B)
Description
Product information
The CNC Battery 1756BA2 is the indispensable energy insurance for your Allen Bradley ControlLogix control systems of the Series B. This 3.0-volt lithium battery has been specially developed to supply the volatile memory (RAM) of the CPU with power in the event of a power failure or shutdown of the system.
While the 1756-BA1 is responsible for Series A, the revised processors of Series B absolutely require this type (1756-BA2). It reliably secures your PLC logic, variable values and system configurations. Failure of this small component can lead to hours of downtime if programmes have to be reloaded – this battery prevents this scenario cost-effectively.
Highlights at a glance
- Specific for Series B: Exact replacement for the Allen Bradley part number 1756-BA2. Compatible with ControlLogix Series B processors (e.g. 1756-L61 Ser B).
- High-performance lithium: Utilises lithium manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2) technology for an extremely stable voltage of 3.0 V and high energy density.
- Plug & Play: Supplied as a complete assembly – lithium cell including permanently connected cable whip and the matching connector for the controller board.
- Long service life: Provides a typical operating life of 2 to 5 years (depending on the uptime of the machine) and a shelf life of up to 10 years.
- Data protection: Effectively prevents the loss of user programmes and real-time data (Real-Time Clock) in the event of power disconnection.
- Robust design: Withstands typical industrial environmental conditions such as vibrations and temperature fluctuations in the control cabinet.
Areas of application
This battery is the standard replacement for the following Rockwell Automation / Allen Bradley components (each Series B):
- ControlLogix 5561 (1756-L61) Series B
- ControlLogix 5562 (1756-L62) Series B
- ControlLogix 5563 (1756-L63) Series B
- ControlLogix 5564 (1756-L64) Series B
- ControlLogix 5565 (1756-L65) Series B
Assembly & safety instructions
- Battery warning: As soon as the red "BAT" LED lights up on the controller, you often only have a reserve of a few days or weeks (with the machine switched off). Replace the battery immediately.
- Change under voltage: To avoid data loss, Allen Bradley often recommends changing the battery with the controller switched on (Power ON). Attention: Be sure to follow the safety regulations for working on live control cabinets (arc flash hazard, protection against accidental contact)!
- Observe the difference: Do not attempt to force a 1756-BA1 into a Series B controller. Brackets and connectors may vary.
- Storage: Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place to minimise self-discharge.

FAQs about the 1756BA2
What is the difference between 1756-BA1 and 1756-BA2?
The main difference is in the controller series for which they are built.
- BA1: For ControlLogix 556x Series A.
- BA2: For ControlLogix 556x Series B. Although the cell itself is often similar (1/2 AA), connector polarity or cable length may vary. Always use the type specified by the manufacturer for your CPU revision.
Can I use a rechargeable battery instead?
No. The charging system of the PLC is not designed to charge a battery. These batteries are primary cells (disposable). A rechargeable battery would also have a high self-discharge and would not be able to backup the memory for months without power.
How do I dispose of the old battery?
Lithium batteries are hazardous waste. They must not be disposed of in residual waste. Tape the terminals of the old battery with insulating tape (risk of short circuit in the collection container) and take it to a certified collection point.
